Review of the workshop “War, Peace, Fragmented Orders, and Political Dialogues. Interdisciplinary and Comparative Perspectives from Political Science and International Law”
From November 12 to 14, 2025, the interdisciplinary workshop “War, Peace, Fragmented Orders, and Political Dialogues. Interdisciplinary and Comparative Perspectives from Political Science and International Law” brought together over 20 participants from Germany, Ukraine, Italy, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Luxembourg, Georgia, Armenia, and the United States. The aim was to highlight current challenges at the interface of political science and international law and to discuss key issues in both existing conflicts and post-conflict situations.
The intensive expert discussions focused, among other things, on the changing political and legal systems in Eastern Europe and Eurasia, the dynamics of social mobilization and social cohesion in Ukraine, and the role of civil society under conditions of the ongoing war. Participants also examined rights and obligations in a state of war and analyzed legal and political instruments of peacebuilding. In addition, comparative findings from international law were drawn upon to gain insights for future peace processes.
The workshop's overarching goal was to deepen interdisciplinary exchange between researchers and practitioners and to create an open space for the development of nuanced perspectives on war, peace, and fragmented political orders. The event also provided a platform for strengthening transnational cooperation and stimulating new research ideas.

The workshop “War, Peace, Fragmented Orders, and Political Dialogues. Interdisciplinary and Comparative Perspectives from Political Science and International Law” was planned and organized by Prof. Dr. Cindy Wittke-Hohfeld, principle investigator of the research area War, Peace, and Postwar Order at the Center for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies “Denkraum Ukraine” / “Think Space Ukraine”, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Helmut Aust (FU Berlin), Dr. Fabian Burkhardt (IOS Regensburg), and Dr. Artur Simonyan (IOS Regensburg).
