DU Vlog: Ukraine between East and West?
In the early 2000s, the notion of a “divided Ukraine” emerged as a dominant explanatory framework: on the one hand, a pro-European, liberal West, and on the other, a Soviet-nostalgic, pro-Russian East.
In our new #DUVlog, Dr. Oleksandr Zabirko (University of Regensburg), principal investigator of the DU research area “Regional Diversity,” examines the validity of this theory in light of the current Russian-Ukrainian war, discusses the historical and social characteristics of the Donbas, and explores the role of language in regional differences within Ukraine.
