Since 2017, Bamberg-based photojournalist Till Mayer has been documenting the war in Ukraine as a long-term project. He was one of the few German journalists who warned of an escalation of the war even before the full-scale invasion.
He has been traveling to Ukraine monthly since the start of the large-scale Russian invasion in 2022. His most impressive photographs can be seen in the exhibition “Europe's Front Line – War in Ukraine.” Ibidem Verlag has published a book of photographs and reports of the same name. Thanks to the support of the German Embassy in Kyiv, it has also been published in Ukrainian this year.
His photos show soldiers in their positions, firing guns, the scenes of battles: Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, Kupiansk, and Pokrovsk. Till Mayer shows that the front line is also where Russian snipers shoot at a mother trying to bury the burned body of her son, where rockets strike residential areas throughout the country, where people fear for their loved ones or mourn their loss. Where drones hunt civilians in Pokrovsk.
The photographs remind us how people survive in fields of rubble between ruins and minefields left behind by the Russian army's attacks. How they stand up to the aggressor every day anew.
The photographer has received numerous awards for his photos and reports.
