Ukraine, Ireland, France 2025 | Documentary | Director: Gar O'Rourke | Cinematographer: Denys Melnyk | Music: Denis Kilty | 91 min | Ukrainian, Russian OmeU

Not far from Odessa lies the Kuyalnyk Sanatorium, a showcase of Soviet healthcare built in the 1970s. The huge building is as outdated as the treatment methods used there. But despite the war, which no one here can ignore, the sea and the black mud still attract Ukrainians seeking relaxation. The sanatorium management, doctors, and staff do their utmost to ensure that the dwindling number of guests have a pleasant stay. In magnificent images, cinematographer Denys Melnyk captures the brutalist architecture of the Kuyalnik cosmos, while director Gar O'Rourke documents the power of resilience and the search for happiness in times of war in this utopian place.

Followed by a discussion with cinematographer Denys Melnik (online), requested.

The film won the Student Jury Award at the Krakow Film Festival 2025. It is Ireland's entry for the 2026 Oscar nominations in the Best International Film category.

Gar O'Rourke

Ukraine, Luxembourg, France, Netherlands 2025 | Documentary | Director: Kateryna Gornostai | Screenplay: Kateryna Gornostai | Cinematography: Oleksandr Roshchyn | Music: Alexey Shmurak | 125 min | Ukrainian OmeU

A school class during physical education: The children run and dribble balls on the floor, as we know it. But in Ukraine, under the conditions of ongoing war, nothing is normal: a school graduation ceremony takes place online, students learn English using a mine drawing, and local history is taught in underground shelters. Filmmaker Kateryna Gornostai takes a sober and uncommented look at everyday school life in Ukraine. She jumps from place to place, close to the front and away from the war, reminding us of the enormous price children and their teachers have to pay for their right to education. “War is becoming part of everyday life, but life and learning go on,” is Gornostai's conclusion.

Strichka chasu | Timestamp premiered in competition at the 75th Berlinale.

Kateryna Gornostai
